TAAS acknowledges that English Language Learners (ELLs) speak multiple languages, come from diverse cultures, and possess a wealth of knowledge and unique experiences that serve to enrich the learning environment. It is against this backdrop that the ELL staff collects multiple data points to inform eligibility for ELL services and identify each students’ areas of strength and need. Additionally, the ELL staff fosters an inclusive learning environment by integrating evidence-based resources and practices with the students’ unique experiences; while honoring their diversity and giving them agency.
To ensure optimal performance in the students’ regular education classrooms, the English Language Learner (ELL) staff collaborates with parents, teachers and the ELL to create a personalized language plan, which details the targeted English language proficiency goals as well as the frequency and duration of the agreed additional support. Through the support provided, students master the basic interpersonal communication skills. The use of grade-level science and social studies content to teach listening, speaking, reading and writing serve to develop the students’ cognitive academic language skills.
